Julie is a self taught artist and over the years has developed her skills especially in the medium of pastels. Her style is photorealistic. She is a Distinguished Member of the Pastel Artists of New Zealand ( PANZ ), and a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America ( PSA ).

She has had much success with national and international awards and her artwork is in private collections in the UK, USA, and NZ.

Julie's fascination with realism started as a child, she remembers clearly the enjoyment and sense of achievement in sketching and painting realistic pictures. Pastel became her favourite medium many years ago while living in the United States and England where she was doing commissioned animal portraits, initially using black and white. When she broadened her subjects, began using colour and more specifically pastel pencils, her work gained increased recognition.

Julie aims to create work that is better than a photograph. She uses her own reference photos, and when she is not in the studio at the easel, she will be off on a photographic trip with her husband around the New Zealand countryside, looking for inspiration, which isn’t hard to find. Her subject matter is varied, from coastal and nautical to the natural fauna and flora of New Zealand.
